About the Music Education Area
At MSU, music educators thrive in a dynamic, inspiring, and collegial learning atmosphere. Undergraduate and graduate programs provide core knowledge and skills, augmented by electives that allow students to innovate, explore individual interests, and develop their own unique voices as music educators.
Students learn from outstanding faculty in the colleges of Music and Education, and go on to be outstanding K-12 music teachers across Michigan and the nation. Graduates of bachelor’s and master’s programs often rise to leadership in the public schools and state music education associations. Doctoral graduates become music teacher educators who are transforming the profession by working with thousands of future teachers across the country and abroad.
The music education program at MSU is led by cutting-edge teacher/scholars who hold national, peer-elected leadership positions in the field of music education. Their research infuses their teaching and informs the profession as a whole, focusing on areas like creativity, social justice, early childhood, choral music education, and music education policy studies.
All successful applicants are automatically considered for competitive merit-based music scholarship. Graduate applicants are eligible for graduate assistantship positions in music education as well as fellowships and scholarships, and no supplemental application is required to be considered.
