Viola Fest
Sunday, October 1, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Murray Hall in the Billman Music Pavilion of the MSU College of Music


Spartan Viola Fest is a one-day event that brings together highly motivated high school violists from all over the region. Led by MSU faculty and Detroit Symphony Orchestra violists Eric Nowlin (left) and Mike Chen, participants enjoy masterclasses, lectures, technique and orchestra excerpt help, social activities, viola ensemble reading sessions, and performances.

Schedule of Events

10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.  –  Check-in, Music Building lobby

10:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.  –  Welcome and tour of the College of Music

10:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.  –  Technique workshop

11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  –  Lunch in Landon Hall

1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.  –  Group studio; solo performance help; All-State Honors Orchestra excerpt help

2:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.  –  Instrument care workshop

2:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.  –  Music in higher education and careers in music

3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.  –  Viola ensemble rehearsal: Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 by J.S. Bach (parts will be provided prior to the event along with an additional surprise piece)

4:30 p.m.  –  Viola Ensemble Concert

Cost of the program is $20.00 which includes a lunch voucher. Observers or guardians/parents can attend for $10.00 each, which will also include a lunch voucher. If an observer or a guardian/parent wants to attend but bring their own lunch, there is no cost.


All events take place in the Music Building, conveniently located on West Circle Drive in North Campus. 333 West Circle Drive, East Lansing, MI  48824

Except for handicapped spaces, parking restrictions are not enforced on the weekends (unless otherwise noted).  There are spaces directly in front of the Music Building, and behind (south) on West Circle.  If none are available, the Visitor lot near Spartan Stadium (#62W on map above) is also available.
