Celebrating the 10th annual Mozart birthday concert
Artists continue beloved annual tradition.
What began as a simple idea to honor one of the greatest composers has turned into a beloved annual tradition. In 2020, the 10th annual Happy Birthday Mozart! concert will once again anchor the College of Music’s esteemed Joanne and Bill Church West Circle Series on Monday, January 27th at 7:30 p.m. in the MSU Auditorium’s Fairchild Theatre.
Ten years of fabulous performances by MSU artists and guests have included some of Mozart’s best known piano sonatas, chamber works and arias. Deborah Moriarty, who also serves as professor of piano and chair of the Piano Area at MSU, is the artist responsible for bringing this popular annual event to life.
“There simply is no other composer like Mozart,” Moriarty said. “I knew when we began ten years ago that his more than 600 works, including compositions that have become pinnacles of symphonic, concert, chamber, operatic, and choral music, would allow us to enjoy many years of celebrating his birthday through bringing his music to our wonderful audience”
Planned for the 2020 Happy Birthday Mozart! are Divertimento for Winds No. 8 and No. 14, Sonata in B-flat Major, Piano 4 Hands, and Sonata in D Major for Two Pianos including some celebratory birthday cookies after the concert.
MSU artists include pianists Young Hyun Cho, Deborah Moriarty, Zhihua Tang, and Tamar Mikeladze; Jan Eberle, oboe; Michael Kroth, bassoon; Corbin Wagner, horn; Youjin Roh, oboe; Christian Green, bassoon; and Kyndra Sisayaket, horn. Dr. Patrick Johnson will serve as the concert guide.
Tickets are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors (age 60 and older), $7 for students with ID and anyone under age 18, and can be purchased online, in the Music Office via phone at (517) 353-5340, or in person in Room 102, Music Building, 333 W. Circle Drive, East Lansing, or at the door, when still available.
