Choral Ensembles Auditions Fall 2019

All MSU ensembles include music majors and non-majors. University Chorale typically includes only music majors. All MSU ensembles (except Chamber Choir) are available for one credit, which may fulfill degree requirements (depending on the degree).

Audition information for each ensemble is listed below:


University Chorale

If you are interested in auditioning for University Chorale, conducted by Dr. Rayl, those auditions will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, August 26, 27, 28 in Music Practice Building, Room 211. All returning and transfer undergraduate vocal music majors and all new graduate students in vocal performance and other majors must do these auditions.

MUS 127: University Chorale; MTWTh, 1:50 – 2:40 p.m.; Music Bldg. Hollander Hall; 45 members; highly selective; mostly graduates and upper level undergraduates. Traditional choral repertoire; several performances on-and off-campus each semester. David Rayl, conductor.


State Singers

If you are interested in auditioning for State Singers, conducted by Dr. Reed, those auditions will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, August 26, 27, 28 in Music Practice Building, Room 210. Freshman vocal music majors and all non-music majors should do these auditions.

  • Go here to sign up for an audition time.
  • No prepared vocal solo is required for this audition, but it will include vocalization, range testing, pitch memory and a short sight reading example.

MUS 126: State Singers; MTWTh, 12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.; Music Bldg. Hollander Hall; 50 members; selective; mostly undergraduate music majors and non-majors. Traditional choral repertoire; two performances on-campus each semester; Jonathan Reed, conductor.


Women’s Chamber Ensemble

If you are interested in auditioning for Women’s Chamber Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Snow, those auditions will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, August 26, 27, 28 in Music Practice Building, Room 205.

  • In preparation for your audition please learn the excerpt found here. Be prepared to sing the voice part that best represents your voice. You will sing your part against the continuo line which Dr. Snow will play. You will also be asked to vocalize.
  • Please note that members of WCE who are vocal music majors must also sing in either Chorale or State Singers. WCE enrollment will be limited to 32 singers.

MUS 125:003: Women’s Chamber Ensemble; TTh, 4:10-5:30 p.m., Cook Recital Hall, Music Building; 32 members; selective. Choral repertoire for women’s voices, much of it composed within the past decade; several performances on- and off-campus each semester; Sandra Snow, conductor.


Men’s Glee Club

If interested please come to first rehearsal on August 30.

MUS 125:2; Men’s Glee Club; TTh, 4:10 – 5:30 p.m.; Music Practice Bldg. #103; 75 members. Rehearsal and performance of a broad range of choral repertoire; several on- and off-campus performances each semester; Jonathan Reed, conductor. 


Women’s Glee Club

MUS 125:002; Women’s Glee Club; MW, 4:10 – 5:30 p.m.; Music Bldg. Hollander Hall; 75 members. Rehearsal and performance of a broad range of choral repertoire; several on- and off-campus performances. Connor Koppin, conductor.


Choral Union

If interested please come to audition/interview and first rehearsal in Comm Arts #147 at 6:00 p.m. on September 4. Be prepared to sing the first verse of The Star-Spangled Banner with piano.

MUS 124: Choral Union; W, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.; Comm Arts & Sciences Bldg. #147; 125 members; mostly adult members of the greater Lansing community; brief audition/interview required. Major choral-orchestral works; one or two performances on-campus each semester; David Rayl, conductor.


Campus Choir

If interested please contact Xiaosha Lin at linxiaos@msu.edu or come to first rehearsal on August 29.

MUS 123; Campus Choir; TTh, 3:00 – 3:50 p.m.; Fairchild Theater; 50 members. Choral works from cultures around the world and from all stylistic periods; one performance each semester; Xiaosha Lin, conductor.


Chamber Choir

Chamber Choir (non-credit): F, 12:40-1:50; Music Bldg. Hollander Hall; 25 members. Traditional chamber repertoire from all periods; one performance each semester; Kylie Ng, conductor.
