Piano

Individualized attention is at the heart of the piano area, which seeks to develop the full potential of every student to ensure outstanding preparation for professional success. All piano students receive private lessons with faculty members no matter their degree track—music education, music therapy, or performance.

Classes are conducted through private lessons, master classes, and keyboard literature classes. In addition, piano pedagogy programs are offered and involve pianists teaching and observing children’s classes in the College of Music’s Community Music School.

All students are required to take piano performance classes coached and critiqued by the entire piano faculty. These are modeled similarly to Woman at piano during Collage II concertmaster classes and provide regular performance opportunities.

Undergraduate students are required to take an accompanying class, which serves as an ensemble, giving students the experience of working as collaborative artists.

Piano students can double major, meaning they can major in a related or unrelated field while pursuing their piano degrees. In addition, an honors program option is available to students in the MSU Honors College.

Piano students in the College of Music are among the best and the brightest. Of their many accomplishments, they have participated in the last four Van Cliburn Competitions.
