Degree Requirements

Master of Arts

Application instructions: To be admitted to the Master of Arts degree program in Musicology on a regular status, an applicant must have a bachelor's degree in musicology, or have completed the courses in musicology that are required for the Bachelor of Arts degree in music at Michigan State University or their equivalents.

Applicants must also submit the following:

1. GRE scores

2. Transcripts of undergraduate coursework

3. An 800-1000 word personal statement addressing the applicant's research interests, career plans, and research goals.  Applicants should also include any additional experience in musicology and discuss what they have done to prepare for their projected work in musicology; specifically, how has the applicant's undergraduate degree helped him or her prepare for a degree in musicology. Also, applicants should mention any proficiency in foreign languages as well as any relevant overseas experience.

4. A 10-15 page research paper demonstrating research ability, including bibliographic citations and/or fieldwork experience.
