Policies for All Recitals
General Policies
- Recitals may be performed in the Music Auditorium or Hart Recital
Hall
(or in some instances, Room 103 Music Practice Building). Indicate
your room
preference on the STUDENT RECITAL SCHEDULING CONTRACT or FACULTY/GUEST
ARTIST/ENSEMBLE
RECITAL RESERVATION CONTRACT. Student recital dates must be submitted
with
the approval of the appropriate faculty instructor. Once scheduled,
required
graduate recital dates will not be changed without permission from the
major
professor and the Graduate Associate Director. Anyone canceling a
recital
may not be allowed to reschedule until the following semester. Due to
heavy
facility use, please schedule your recital as soon as possible.
- Student recitals may be scheduled Monday through Friday at 6:00
p.m. and
8:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at noon, 2, 4, 6 and 8 p.m. NOTE: All required/graded graduate recitals must be
professionally
recorded. Contact Recording Services (226 MB) as soon as you have your
room
confirmed.
- The Green Room, Room 110 Music Building, is available ½ hour
before
your recital for warm-up purposes.
- Following your recital, you must be sure
- Hall or room is cleaned and secured,
- Keyboard instruments are covered,
- Tables and other equipment and supplies are returned to the
correct
place,
- All lights are turned off, and
- Any reception area is cleaned and trash placed in the courtyard
dumpster.
Scheduling a Recital
- Print and fill out the STUDENT RECITAL SCHEDULING CONTRACT
or
the FACULTY/GUEST ARTIST/ENSEMBLE RECITAL RESERVATION CONTRACT
to reserve facilities for your recital. Review the MSU Web Scheduling
site before submitting your form to determine what
rooms are available. Choose a date for your recital that can be
attended by all involved. Avoid scheduling your recital in conflict with MSU
ensembles, faculty recitals, or other concerts.
- Students submit the contract, signed by a faculty member, to Room
253 Music Building for scheduling. Keep a copy for your records.
- You will receive confirmation of the date, place, and time by
e-mail. Check
the website to confirm that your recital appears on the updated
schedule.
Recitals are scheduled on priority basis: faculty, required graduate
student,
required undergraduate, non-required. Contact Chris Kaye if you
do not
receive confirmation at (517) 432-8344.
Student Rehearsals
- Schedule your rehearsals in person in Room 253 Music Building, or email Chris Kaye, kaye@msu.edu.
- The Auditorium and Hart Recital Hall are not to be used for general
practice;
these are for performances and dress rehearsals.
- For required doctoral recitals, you may reserve the performance
venue for
up to five hours for rehearsals.
- For required masters recitals, you may reserve the performance venue
for
up to three hours for rehearsals.
- For non-required recitals, you may reserve the performance venue for
up
to two hours for rehearsals.
- One additional hour within 24 hours of the performance date may be
scheduled
if space is available.
- A recital involving a large or complicated set-up may be allowed
extra time
on the day of the performance. Contact Chris Kaye in 253 Music Building to
get
your set-up time added to the schedule.
Keys for Performance Venues
- The Main Office staff in Room 102 is available to open the room
(and piano,
if necessary) during regular business hours (8-12 and 1-5).
- For rehearsals and performances during non-business hours, sign out
the
room key and grand piano key (if necessary) for a $20 security deposit
the
day before you are scheduled to use the room or for weekend use by
4:45 p.m.
Friday. Keys will not be issued until the deposit is paid.
- The Green Room key may be checked out for an additional $5 security
deposit.
- Keys are to remain with the person to whom they are assigned.
- Keys must be returned the second business day after use. Keys may be
returned
to Room 102 either in person or in the mail slot in the door. You will
forfeit
your deposit if the keys are not returned on time. Your security
deposit may
be claimed if key(s) are returned to Room 102 Music Building on or before the
second business
day after recital.
Programs
Students
- Complete the Recital Program Form at least two weeks before your
recital.
You may email it to programs@music.msu.edu if you wish.
- Two-three days after your Recital Program Form has been received by
the
Main Office, a proof of the program will be available for you to pick
up.
You will need to have your program approved (signed) by your
instructor for
a required recital. Please return your corrected, signed program one
week
before your recital to the Main Office for copying. The Main Office
prints
55 recital programs at no cost to the performer; however, the School
of Music
is not obligated to print programs filed after the due date.
- A copy of your program will be placed in your advising folder.
(NOTE: NASM
rules require that a copy of all MSU School of Music programs be kept
on file.
If your program was not provided by the School of Music, please submit
a copy
of the program to the main office.)
- Programs may be picked up in Room 102 the day before the recital on weekdays between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.
- We request that no one put posters on the walls or doors. The Main
Office
will post your program in the display boards in the Music and Music
Practice
Buildings on the day of your performance. No other posters are
permitted.
Faculty
- Complete the Faculty Program Template (web availability pending)
and submit
it via e-mail to programs@music.msu.edu at least 2 weeks before your
performance
date.
- A sample of your program will be placed in your box 2-3 days after
receipt
of your program. Please make any corrections to your program and
return to
the Main Office.
- Copies of your program will be available the day before your
recital. They
will also be posted in the display boards of the Music and Music
Practice
Buildings.
Recording

weeks notice.
Refer to the Recital Recording Policy.
NOTE: All graduate recitals must have a professional quality recording
made.
Faculty
Recital recordings are charged to the individual performer; they cannot
be charged
to a department account (ensemble performances are recorded at no
charge).
Keyboard Instruments and Equipment
- Students are responsible for their own stage set-up, lighting, stage
crew
and ushers.
- See the piano technicians in Room 315 Music Practice Building or 097 Music Building to make a special
request
for piano or harpsichord use. Refer to the Piano Use Policy.
