MSU offers Handel’s Messiah sing-along

(Nov. 18, 2009) The Michigan State University Choral Society will once again sponsor a Sing-Along Messiah on Sun., Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. at Edgewood United Church, 469 N. Hagadorn, in East Lansing. The public is invited to attend and participate as singers or audience members.

MSU Opera Theatre presents the provocative tale of SusannahSusannah poster

(Nov. 13, 2009) MSU’s Opera Theatre presents Carlisle Floyd’s provocative American masterpiece, Susannah, which examines the victimization of women, the dangerof mob mentality, and how power can be abused. Nov. 20, 21, 22 at MSU Concert Auditorium.

High school string players join with MSU Symphony Orchestra Nov. 14 to perform Holst’s “The Planets”

(Nov. 9, 2009) It takes a very large orchestra to handle a massive work like “The Planets,” by Gustav Holst, and the MSU College of Music is up for the challenge. Director of MSU Orchestras Leon Gregorian will conduct nearly 180 musicians in five movements of the popular orchestral suite on Sat., Nov. 14, at 8 p.m. at Wharton Center for the Performing Arts.

MSU Brass Quintet teams up with Chicago’s Sones de México Sones de Mexico photo

(Oct. 20, 2009) On Thurs., Nov. 5, the MSU Graduate Brass Quintet will team up with nationally renowned, Grammy-nominated Chicago folk group Sones de México, at 8 p.m. in the Music Building Auditorium.

MSU School of Rock student bands to play East Lansing concert

(Oct. 15, 2009) -- Teens participating in the School of Rock, a new class at the MSU Community Music School, will give a concert on October 23, at the Small Planet.

Erb Family Foundation helps bring Community Music School jazz to Detroit youth

(Sept. 24, 2009) -- In a time of declining resources for the arts, young musicians in Southeast Michigan have new assets to explore jazz. The MSU College of Music recently expanded its Community Music School (CMS) to Detroit and the Erb Family Foundation provided a $50,000 grant to support MSU Jazz@CMS Detroit.

College of Music to give 2009-10 concert series at the Michigan Historical Museum

(Sept. 23, 2009) -- Student groups from the MSU College of Music will present a series of six concerts at the Michigan Historical Museum during 2009-10. The free concert series, “Music at the Museum,” marks the second year of the partnership.

Brohn, 1998 Tony winner for Best Orchestration for Ragtime and a nominee in 2002 and 2004 for Sweet Smell of Success and Wicked, respectively, is to be celebrated in a one-night gala in London at the Theatre Royal on October 4, at 7:30 p.m.



‘The Soloist’ sparks instrument donation drive for MSU’s Community Music School in Detroit

(Aug. 14, 2009) -- This year’s book selection for Michigan State University’s and the city of East Lansing’s One Book, One Community program has sparked the idea for a musical instrument donation drive to benefit MSU’s new Community Music School in Detroit.

MSU Community Music School offers farewell concert in honor of Mary Alice Stollak

Mary Alice Stollak(April 28, 2009): At her May 14 farewell concert, Mary Alice Stollak will take the podium one last time as director of the MSU Children’s Choir before she enters retirement. Stollak founded the much-acclaimed choir in 1993.

Prof Yuri Gandelsman(Feb. 10, 2009): Violist Yuri Gandelsman will offer his first recital at MSU’s College of Music on Wed., Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m., and will provide an extra helping of fine music when he presents his newly formed chamber group, Ad Libitum.

 




College of Music gives third concert in 2008-09 series at Michigan Historical Museum

H2 Quartete(Jan. 26, 2009): The H2 Saxophone Quartet, a student group from the College of Music, will present a third free concert at the Michigan Historical Museum on February 1, at 1:30 p.m. The concert is part of the “Music at the Museum” series.

 

 




Children’s Choir to perform all-Russian program with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra

(Jan. 6, 2009): Singing in Belarusian is no small task for an English-speaking children’s choir, but when the Detroit Symphony Orchestra approached the MSU Children’s Choir with the opportunity to sing in “From Russia with Love” on January 15-18 at Orchestra Hall in Detroit.


Annual "Jazz: Spirituals, Prayer and Protest" concerts to be held at MSU

(Jan. 6, 2009): 6, Two free jazz concerts will be performed on Jan. 18, by Jazz Orchestra I, Vocal Jazz Ensemble I, and Voices of Total Praise gospel choir as part of the campus-wide celebration commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
