Student Accomplishments in Music Education
Congratulations to the following students and organizations that have contributed recently to MSU's leadership in music education:
UNDERGRADUATE
The MSU student chapter of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) has received an award as the best ASTA chapter in the United States for 2004-05. Congratulations to MSU ASTA student president Jennifer Coalson and faculty advisor Judy Palac.
GRADUATE
Lisa Britsch, doctoral student in music education, published "Investigating Performance-related Problems of Young Musicians" in the March 2005 issue of Medical Problems of Performing Artists.
Doctoral student Mark Garberich published a philosophical response to June Boyce-Tillman's paper "Toward an Ecology of Music Education" in the Fall 2004 issue of the Philosophy of Music Education Review. His response was based on his presentation at the 2003 International Philosophy of Music Education Symposium.
Recent doctoral graduate Denise Guilbault published "The Effect of Harmonic Accompaniment on the Tonal Achievement and Tonal Improvisations of Children in Kindergarten and First Grade" in the Spring 2004 issue of the Journal of Research in Music Education, which is the leading research journal in the field of music education. The article was based on her doctoral dissertation.
Doctoral student Christina Hornbach published a philosophical response to Masafumi Ogawa's paper "Music Teacher Education in Japan" in the Fall 2004 issue of the Philosophy of Music Education Review. Her response was based on her presentation at the 2003 International Philosophy of Music Education Symposium. She has accepted a position as assistant professor of music education at Eastern Michigan University, where she will develop and teach graduate music education courses and undergraduate general music methods courses.
Doctoral student Sheri Jaffurs published "The Impact of Informal Music Learning Practices in the Classroom, Or How I Learned to Teach from a Garage Band," which was the lead article in the December 2004 issue of the International Journal of Music Education, the preeminent music education journal in the world. She also presented "The Intersection of Formal and Informal Learning Processes" at the 2004 International Symposium on Musical Collaboration in Milton Keynes, England. Her article "Developing Musicality: Formal and Informal Practices" was published in the December 2004 issue of the e-journal Action, Criticism & Theory for Music Education. Nathan Kruse, doctoral student in music education, and Christine Pollard, doctoral student in music education with a cognate in music therapy, will respond to philosophy papers at the International Philosophy of Music Education Symposium in Hamburg, Germany, in May.
Doctoral student Michael Norman presented "Intonation: The Heart of Developing Musicianship" and coordinated panel sessions "Commissioning New Music" and "Composers on Composing" at the 2005 Michigan Music Education Conference in Ann Arbor.
Janice Waldron, doctoral student in music education, will present the paper "Gunther Schuller's Approach to Crafting a Philosophy of Conducting: Implications for the Instrumental Music Classroom" at the International Philosophy of Music Education Symposium in Hamburg,
Germany, in May.
