Frederick Fennell, leader in the wind ensemble movement, one of America’s most recorded living classical conductors, principal guest conductor of the Dallas Wind Symphony, principal conductor of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra in Japan, and professor emeritus at the University of Miami College of Music, conducted Cailliet’s arrangement of Wagner’s Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral and his own arrangement of Bagley’s National Emblem March at an MSU Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds concert.


The MSU Opera Theatre presented Once I Was: The Songs of Ricky Ian Gordon, composer for opera, dance, theatre, film, and the concert hall. He also presented a master class featuring MSU students and some award-winning local high school singers.

Madurai R. Sundar, vocals, head of Trinity Academy of Fine Arts in the Detroit area, presented Indian Music Recital along with group…waiting on Michael..

             

Jazz Studies Guest Artists

Carl Allen, director of small ensembles, The Juilliard School, presented a drum master class.

Marcus Belgrave, artist in residence, Oberlin Conservatory, presented a trumpet clinic.

Walter Blanding, tenor saxophonist, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, presented a woodwinds master class.

Cyrus Chestnutt, professional jazz pianist, presented a master class.

Andre Hayward, trombonist, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, presented a trombone master class.

Marion Hayden, critically acclaimed bassist and composer, presented a jazz master class

Wynton Marsalis, artistic director, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, presented a trumpet lecture clinic.

Harvey Mason, professional jazz drummer and clinician, presented a drum master class.


Gayelynn McKinney, a gifted drummer, and also composer, pianist and saxophonist, presented a jazz master class.

Annie Moses, professional violinist and clinician, presented a strings master class.

Marcus Printup, trumpeter, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, presented a trumpet master class.


Ellen Rowe, associate professor of jazz piano at the University of Michigan College of Music, presented a jazz master class.

Andrew Speight, director of jazz studies at San Francisco State University, presented a saxophone clinic.

Ursula Walker, professional jazz vocalist and clinician, presented a vocal lecture.

Betsy Jolas, world-renowned composer from Paris, France, presented a lecture/demonstration.

Frank Kowalsky, professor of clarinet, Florida State University, presented a master class and recital with Trio Con Brio (his clarinet-cello-piano trio).

O! Freedom! Guest Artists

The musical drama O! Freedom! tells the remarkable true story of John W. Jones (1817-1900), a fugitive slave, and his heroic rise to prominence in Elmira, New York. It was performed by Jack Waddell and the MSU Chorale.

William David Brohn, Tony® Award winning orchestrator for Broadway and movies; composer; arranger; MSU music theory graduate (’55), presented a master class themed “Future of Musical Theatre.” He also co-arranged 12 traditional spirituals in haunting new a capella arrangements for soloist and choir for O! Freedom!

Ted Reinert, author, director, wrote and directed O! Freedom!

Jack Waddell, operatic bass, actor, and private voice teacher for prominent Broadway performers, starred in the musical drama O! Freedom!

Sally O’Reilly, professor of violin at the University of Minnesota, presented a master class and pedagogy/music education session.

James Sommerville, principal horn, Boston Symphony Orchestra and faculty member, New England Conservatory, presented a master class and a recital.

Trichy Sankaran, Mrdangam; performer, composer, cultural ambassador, and professor of music at York University, Toronto, performed as part of an Indian Music Recital.

Vera Danchenko, who teaches Russian Diction and Art Song courses at the Peabody Conservatory, presented a master class in Russian Diction for Singers.

Jing Ling-Tam, professor of music and director of choral studies, University of Texas-Arlington, presented a master class?
