Faculty Accomplishments

Raphael Jimenez has been selected as one of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies’ (CLACS’) outstanding faculty for 2004-2005. International Studies and Programs will acknowledge this award in its fifteenth annual International Awards Ceremony booklet. The ISP award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, April 20 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm on the third floor of the International Center.

John Kratus
presented "Development of a Measure of Creative Listening in Music" at the 8th International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition in Evanston, IL in August 2004. Also in August he gave a formal presentation on improving ensemble retention in Arlington, Virginia, to U.S. Defense Department education officials. In October 2004, he presented week-long workshops in Tokyo, Japan; Atlanta, Georgia; and Bingen, Germany on improvisation, critical thinking, curriculum development, and ensemble retention to all music teachers in the U.S. Department of Defense schools internationally. He coordinated the Michigan Honors Composition Concert and chaired the session "Interviews with Young Composers" at the Michigan Music Education In-service Conference in January 2005.

Judy Palac co-presented (with David Sogin) the study, "Hand Asymmetry: Finger Dexterity in String Players" at the International Society for Music Education's Research Seminar in the Canary Islands in July 2004. In October 2004 she served as the chair of the Music Education Neuromusculoskeletal Subcommittee for the development of wellness policy at the national Health Promotion in Schools of Music Conference in Ft. Worth.


Jon Reed conducted the Wisconsin Women's All-State Choir in November 2004. He also conducted the Illinois Music Education Association District 1 Choir in Oak Park, IL in November 2004. He co-presented (with Sandra Snow) the session, "For Him about Her; For Her about Him. Voice Building for Men's And Women's Choirs" at the National Convention of American Choral Directors Association in Los Angeles in February 2005.

Mitch Robinson was a panel member for the session "Focus on the Master’s Degree in Music Education" at the Conference on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL in October 2004. He presented the keynote address, "Issues in Beginning Music Teacher Induction and Support" and sessions on "Getting the Most From Your Mentor" and "Driving the Profession: Mentoring for Change" at the Michigan Music Education Early Careers Conference, Central Michigan University in November 2004. He presented "Making the Grade: Current Trends in Assessment" at the Michigan Music Education In-service Conference in January 2005. He published "A tensegretic theory of school-college collaboration in music education" in Arts Education Policy Review in February 2005.

Sandra Snow conducted the Wisconsin Children's All-State Choir in November 2004. She conducted the SSAA Honor Choir for the Northwest Division Conference of MENC in Bellevue, WA in February 2005. She also co-presented (with Jon Reed) the session, "For Him about Her; For Her about Him. Voice Building for Men's And Women's Choirs" at the National Convention of American Choral Directors Association in Los Angeles in February 2005.

Mark Sullivan has been selected as an award recipient for the 2005 All-University Excellence in Diversity Recognition and Awards Program.  He will receive an Individual award in the category of Sustained Effort Toward Excellence in Diversity. The program will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2005 at 4:00 pm in the Lincoln Room of the Kellogg Center. A reception in Red Cedar Rooms A & B will immediately follow the awards ceremony.

 

Cindy Taggart presented a workshop for all music teachers in the Washington D.C. Public Schools entitled "How Children Learn Music," in August 2004. She also co-presented three sessions about the issues involved in Outreach for faculty in higher education at the College Music Society National Conference in San Francisco in October 2004. In January 2005, she presented a session "Developing Critical Thinkers in Elementary General Music" at the Michigan Music Education In-service Conference. She also presented a workshop for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's Musicians on how to do developmentally appropriate early childhood outreach and also did a program evaluation of their children's concerts in February 2005.

Rodney Whitaker, director of jazz studies, who received the MSU 2004-05 Teacher-Scholar Award, to be awarded to him at the MSU Founder’s Day Ceremony on Feb. 11, 2005, from 2-4 p.m. in Great Hall, Wharton Center.
