Michael Adams, an undergraduate in trombone performance, performed with the Midland Symphony Orchestra.

Galina Adjunts, a doctoral candidate in violin performance, was appointed violin instructor at the Flint Community School (Mich.) and performed with the Midland Symphony Orchestra.

Emily Austreng, an undergraduate in voice performance, was a soloist with the Traverse City Symphony Orchestra (Mich.).

Benjamin Ayotte, a doctoral candidate in music theory, received an American Musicological Society Grant to attend the American Musicology Society/Society for Music Theory meetings in Seattle.

Michael Barar, an undergraduate in viola performance, performed with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.

John Bragle, a master’s student in con-ducting, was appointed at Northwestern Michigan College. B.M. (’04).

Marella Briones, a master’s student in choral conducting, was appointed assistant professor of music at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. B.M. (’01).

Lisa Britsch, a doctoral candidate in music education, was selected to give a presentation at a Music Education Graduate Student Research Forum at the University of North Texas. She was awarded a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation grant for dissertation proposal development. She published “Investigating Performance-related Problems of Young Musicians” in Medical Problems of Performing Artists. M.M. (’95).

Lisa Broniak, an undergraduate in flute performance and music therapy, performed with the Jackson Symphony Orchestra. She was the recipient of a Jeffrey and Kathryn Cole International Study Award Stipend and the Ruth Dahlberg Smith Study Abroad Scholarship. She received the Gaston National Student Writing Competition Award from the American Music Therapy Association.

Matthew Brown, a doctoral candidate in tuba performance, performed with the Detroit Chamber Winds, the Lansing, Ann Arbor and Flint Symphony Orchestras (Mich.), and the Bay Street Brass Works. M.M. (’02).

Stacey Carter, an undergraduate in jazz studies, was chosen to participate in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program.

Mauricio Cespedes, master’s student in viola performance, was invited to participate in the Aspen Advanced Quartet Study Program at the Aspen Music Festival.

Jennifer Coalson, an undergraduate in music education and double bass performance, performed with the Midland Symphony Orchestra. She served as president of the MSU student chapter of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). She was awarded a scholarship at Brevard Music Festival and the Leadership in Music Education award.

Benjamin Cobb, an undergraduate in bass trombone performance, performed with the Ohio Light Opera Company and Pontiac Symphony Orchestra.

Allison Cook, an undergraduate in double bass performance, was a finalist for the orchestral competition at the International Society of Bassist Convention. She performed with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra.

Andrew Crane, a doctoral candidate in choral conducting and voice performance, was appointed director of choral activities at California State University – San Bernardino.

 

Zachary Crawford, undergraduate in bass trombone performance, received an Honorable Mention at the International Trombone Association Orchestra solo competitions. He performed with The Producers National Tour at Wharton Center and performed with the Lansing and West Shore Symphony Orchestras.

Gerald Custer, a doctoral candidate in choral conducting, published the articles “The Conducting Project Paper” and “Philosophy–Who Needs It?” in the Choral Journal and “Small Groups in the Volunteer Choir: Challenges, Benefits, and Strategies” in Bella Voce. GIA Publications published “Elegy” and a new performing edition of Byrd’s Ave Verum Corpus.

Jeff Deibel, a doctoral candidate in saxophone performance, performed at the 14th World Saxophone Conference in Slovenia.

Paris Draghici, a doctoral candidate in violin performance, performed with the Lansing, Jackson and West Shore Symphony Orchestras.

Tami Draves, a doctoral candidate in music education, presented the paper “Cooperating Music Teachers’ Perspective on the Student Teaching Experience” at the International Conference on Narrative Inquiries in Music Education Symposium at Arizona State University.

Derek Dunbar, an undergraduate in composition and music theory, was accepted into the United States Marine Corp Band Program for tuba.

Brian Enabnit, a master’s student in music education, was a semifinalist for the euphonium artist division of the Falcone Festival (Mich.). He was appointed instructor at Wartburg College (Iowa).

Kent Eshelman, a doctoral candidate in tuba performance, was named the first prize winner of the Midland Odessa Symphony Young Artist Concerto Competition and was a featured artist at the Midwest Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference. He served as visiting lecturer in tuba and euphonium at Grand Valley State University and was named a winner of the Bradlin Scholarship. He was a semifinalist in an international tuba competition held in Porcia (Italy).

Mark Flegg, a doctoral candidate in trumpet performance, was principal trumpet with the Flint Symphony Orchestra (Mich.).

Marla Fogderud, a doctoral candidate in voice performance, was featured in a recital at the National Association of Teachers of Singing annual convention.

Mitch Gabel, a doctoral candidate in trumpet performance, was appointed assistant professor of trumpet at the University of Northern Arizona - Flagstaff. He received Outstanding Recognition at the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival.

Oleg Galanin, a doctoral candidate in composition, performed on WOBC 91.5 FM at Oberlin Conservatory.

 

Mark Garberich, a doctoral candidate in music education, published the philosophical response “Toward an Ecology of Music Education” in the Philosophy of Music Education Review.

Kim Goddard, a master’s student in saxophone performance, performed at the 14th World Saxophone Conference in Slovenia.

Andrew Goodlet, an undergraduate in double bass performance, performed as principal bass with the Netherlands Youth Orchestra in Holland.

Timothy Gunn, a doctoral candidate in bassoon performance, was appointed bassoon instructor at Albion College (Mich.). M.M. (’01).

Liesl Hansen, an undergraduate in music education and horn performance, studied with the principal horn of the Vienna Philharmonic. She performed with the Ohio Light Opera Company and the Jackson Symphony Orchestra.

Walter Harris, an undergraduate in bass trombone performance, was awarded the Peets Scholarship.

Guy Harrison, a doctoral candidate in violin performance, was appointed assistant concertmaster for the Lansing and Jackson Symphony Orchestras. M.M. (’04).

Jon Holden, a doctoral candidate in clarinet performance, performed with the Traverse and West Shore Symphony Orchestras and Grand Rapids Symphony. M.M. (’04).

Michael Hovnanian, a doctoral candidate in double bass performance, was invited to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra auditions and accepted a position with the Grand Rapids Symphony (Mich.). He performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. M.M. (’02).

Johanna Hyun, a master’s student in clarinet performance, was awarded the Gluck Foundation Scholarship.

 

Honors Concert Winners

Each year, the MSU School of Music hosts an Honors Concert Competition to spotlight its most talented students. Nationally recognized judges select the winners. Selection for this honor is the highest performance achievement for School of Music students. Winners performed as soloists with the MSU Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Leon Gregorian and guest conductors, in March of both 2005 and 2006 in the Cobb Great Hall of Wharton Center.

Winners from 2005 were:

Gifford Howarth, percussion

Igor Kalnin, violin
