About the University Bands
The bands at Michigan State University have represented MSU at many national and international conventions and conferences in the United States. The premier university band is the Wind Symphony, which is comprised of 65 musicians who perform together as a full wind symphony and also in smaller chamber wind groups.
The Symphony Band and the Concert Band are each composed of approximately 75 musicians who perform the full range of band repertoire, and also perform in smaller chamber wind groups.
The Campus Band, comprises about 120 musicians and provides playing experiences for non-music and music majors who want to improve their skills on secondary instruments.
Auditions
Auditions for the university bands are held during the registration period just prior to the fall semester. A scheduled appointment is advisable and may be arranged by visiting calling the MSU Band Office (517) 355-7654, located in the Music Building. Auditions are also held during the fall semester for those who wish to participate in a concert band organization for the second semester.
Anyone auditioning for the Wind Symphony and Symphony Band must prepare the prescribed excerpts. Students not wishing to be considered for Wind Symphony or Symphony Band, but wishing to audition for Concert Band may use the prescribed excerpts, OR they may prepare a solo or etude as their audition material. No audition is required for admission into the Campus Band.
