Spartan Youth Wind Symphony

The Spartan Youth Wind Symphony (SYWS) is a new ensemble slated to start in the 2009-2010 academic year and replaces the MSU Honors Band. It is sponsored by the MSU Bands in conjunction with the Michigan State University College of Music.
The ensemble is under the leadership and guidance of the MSU Band conducting faculty. SYWS is open to the most outstanding Michigan high school instrumentalists (woodwind, brass, and percussion), providing an opportunity to rehearse in a university setting. Students will perform and interact with peers from around the state and receive instruction from College of Music faculty and students. They will also enhance their skills as musicians and ensemble performers through the exploration of advanced-level repertoire in an inspired rehearsal atmosphere. The experience culminates in a concert shared with the MSU Wind Symphony and Symphony Band at the end of the fall and winter semesters.
AUDITIONS
• Students must be in grades 9-12 during the 2009-2010 school year
• Auditions Days: May 2 and 3, 2009 (starting at 2:00 p.m.)
• Auditions are held at the Music Building, West Circle Drive, on the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing
• Students will be notified of audition results no later than May 15, 2009
• Audition requirements are as follows:
Woodwind/Brass: Students should prepare a solo or musical excerpts with contrasting
styles that demonstrate their best level of technical and expressive
performance abilities. The prepared audition does not need to exceed three
minutes in duration.
Percussion: Students should prepare solos or musical excerpts that show
proficiency on snare drum, mallet instrument, and timpani. Percussionists are required
to bring their own sticks.
2009-2010 FEES and TUITION (non-refundable)
• Application deadline – April 15, 2009
• Application fee - $45 (must be included with application)
• Annual tuition for participation in the 2009 – 2010 SYWS - $200

REHEARSALS
• All rehearsals are in the Music Building, Room 120, from 3:00–5:30 p.m.
NINE fall Sundays, 2009: October 4, 11, 18, 25; November 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
NINE winter Sundays, 2010: February 7, 14, 21; March 7, 14, 21, 28; April 11, 18
PERFORMANCES
• All performances take place in the Cobb Great Hall of the Wharton Center for Performing Arts on the Michigan State University campus
