Founded in 1993, Michigan State University's Community Music School (CMS) is the outreach division of the MSU College of Music. Its mission is to provide comprehensive music education—quality instruction, related music services, and educational programs—for interested individuals of all ages and levels. The facility is conveniently located off-campus, on the east ern edge of East Lansing on Timberlane Street, just north of Burcham Road, with plenty of free parking.
CMS offers:
- Lessons on most band and orchestra instruments, piano, guitar, voice, and carillon during the 34-week school year and the 10-week summer semester.
- Early Childhood Music classes for newborns, toddlers, and preschoolers during fall and winter, and three five-week sessions in late spring and summer.

Choirs for children and adults, including the Grammy-winning MSU Children's Choir and the Choral Union adult choir.
• Musicianship classes for children and music theory for adults.
• Music therapy clinical services.
• Summer band, string, choir, and therapy camps.
• String and piano instruction using the Suzuki Method.
• New Horizons beginning band for seniors and Beginning String Ensemble for adults.
• Folk Music Instrument instruction.
• Special classes (steel drum, etc.)

Directions
CMS is housed in the
former
Trinity Church building off Burcham Road (between McDonald Middle School
and Burcham Hills Retirement Center) at 841-B Timberlane Street, East Lansing.
From the west:
East on Saginaw to Hagadorn, turn right. South on Hagadorn to Burcham, turn left. East on Burcham to Timberlane, turn left. Timberlane building is on the left (841 Timberlane, looks like a church, Community Music School is in the west wing of the building).
From Okemos: West on Grand River Ave to Park Lake, turn right. North on Park Lake to Burcham, turn left. West on Burcham to Timberlane, turn right (841 Timberlane, looks like a church, Community Music School is in the west wing of the building).
From the MSU campus: North on Abbott to Burcham, turn right. East on Burcham to Timberlane (past Hagadorn), turn left (841-B Timberlane Street, looks like a church, Community Music School is in the west wing of the building).
