The master’s degree in theory offers an emphasis in pedagogy and traditional tracks.
Graduates focusing on pedagogy can combine their scholarly track with a DMA performance degree. Graduates become are prepared to compete for the many university positions that involve both studio (performance) and classroom (academic) teaching.
The traditional track emphasizes research and writing and prepares graduates for doctoral study. Students enrolled in this academic focus are preparing to enter PhD programs at many of the country’s top schools, including the Eastman School of Music, Yale University, Columbia University, City University of New York, Florida State University, Cincinnati Conservatory, and Indiana University.
The music theory area also offers a hybrid track, combining the focus of both pedagogy and traditional tracks to give students an emphasis in recent pedagogical developments in music theory while preparing students to apply for Ph.D. programs.
