As a reflection of his devotion and enjoyment of his 36-year teaching career at the MSU College of Music, John S. Richardson wanted to give something back. He served as professor of piano from 1945 to 1981, and died February 2, 2000. At his request, his wife, Florence, also a pianist who frequently performed with her husband, donated two Steinway grand pianos to the school in his memory.
Professor Richardson earned his bachelor of music degree from the New England Conservatory and his master’s of music degree from Yale University.
Ralph Votapek, professor emeritus of piano at MSU, was a close friend of Professor Richardson. “John was a conscientious and dedicated teacher, and Michigan State meant a lot to him and his wife, Florence,” said Votapek. “In February 1968, John and I met at the Lansing airport during a big snow storm. I was investigating the possibility of a position here and he encouraged me to join the faculty ––a decision I've never regretted. As with so many things in their lives, the pianos were well maintained and in excellent condition. This is a much-appreciated and valuable gift.”
