In May 2003, MSU Provost Lou Anna K. Simon stepped in as MSU interim president for 130 days while Peter McPherson took a leave of absence to serve as a financial coordinator in Iraq. To recognize her exemplary work and the support of Dr. Roy Simon while she served as both MSU provost and president, the MSU Board of Trustees established the Drs. Lou Anna K. and Roy J. Simon Scholarship Fund.
The Simons chose to use the $30,000 fund to provide financial aid to students in the College of Music, especially those in the Jazz Studies Program.
Dr. Roy J. Simon, director of telecommunication and transportation systems at MSU, has a great affinity for the MSU College of Music, having begun his undergraduate studies as a music theory, composition and conducting major.
“We want to play a part in making music education more accessible to a broader a group of students,” said the Simons. “Music students don’t generally get a lot of support, yet they make such tremendous contributions to society.”
The Simons plan to continue building on the scholarship over the years. Lynn Gruenewald, an undergraduate in flute performance and jazz studies, is the first recipient of this scholarship.
