Schuiling Sends Spartan Marching Band to Festival

MSU alumnus Bill Schuiling (B.A. Marketing ’65), of Charlevoix, Michigan, turned possibility into reality for the MSU Spartan Marching Band (SMB). His generous gift allowed the band to give its third performance at the Venetian Festival in Charlevoix in July 2004. He had seen them perform at the festival in 2001 and 2002, but when they skipped a year in 2003, he took notice, and did something about it.

The SMB performed in the festival’s parade and presented a concert in the downtown band shell.

“Mr. Schuiling’s generous donation allowed us to once again create a very positive experience for over 180 students in the SMB, without having to rely on businesses to subsidize the costs of travel and food,” said John Madden, SMB Director. “The two previous trips to Charlevoix were generously subsidized by Dean Transportation, and the Venetian Festival itself. Art Tebo, general manager for Boyne Mountain Resort, compensated the band’s lodging this year, and the Charlevoix Band Boosters contributed food as well.”
