Marlene Gardner of Rochester, Michigan, has pledged $50,000 to name two of the grand piano practice rooms in the proposed new College of Music building. Gardner’s interest in the building was piqued after she attended a College of Music event at Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester Hills last year.
A graduate of Oakland University, Gardner began her academic career as a music major but later changed to English. She has enjoyed a successful career as a private piano teacher, giving lessons from her home. Her husband, G. Glenn Gardner, is a retired Chrysler engineer and a 1958 alumnus of MSU’s College of Engineering.
“I wanted to contribute to this great cause because of the wonderful work that the school is doing,” said Gardner. “When I heard about the plans, I was very interested, particularly because the school has been housed in the same building since my husband was a student at MSU. When we visited recently, I really saw the need for a new building. Since music has always been a major part of my life, I’d like to see the new building come to fruition. I think the design of the new building will get students from across campus to take notice of all the wonderful opportunities, programs and concerts the school offers.”
